Casey’s To Expand Pizza Express Locations in 2014

Casey’s General Stores Inc. is set to open five more pizza-only stores in the Des Moines, Iowa metro area in 2014, the Des Moines Register reported.

The Pizza Express stores, which will likely be located in areas not serviced by Casey’s convenience stores, are set to offer a frozen yogurt delivery service, and will feature online pizza ordering through the Casey’s Website.

“This is a way we can supplement our business,” Terry Handley, Casey’s chief operating officer, told the Des Moines Register.

Casey’s convenience stores started pizza delivery in 2012, and now offers the service at 350 locations.

The company decided to try the pizza-only store—Pizza Express—which opened in August at 1240 Copper Creek Drive, because of the strong demand for the Casey’s pizzas at its Pleasant Hill convenience store location, which sells between 120 and 140 pizzas a day, through in-store pickup and delivery.

Casey’s also announced Tuesday that it has added a flatbread pizza, which is a thin-crust version of pizzas it usually sells to its Pleasant Hill store. If the launch goes well, Casey’s plans to roll the flatbread out to other locations. The flatbread pizzas will cost the same as Casey’s other pizzas, $11.99 for a large, single-topping pie and $15.99 for specialty pizzas.

Last year, Casey’s sold about 12 million whole pies and 48 million pizza slices.
