Headlines are always devoted to whatever it is that happens to be scaring the pants off us today (a disease like Ebola, global warming, the economy, etc.) while, in fact, approximately 3,300 deaths occur every day worldwide due to road accidents. So, why aren’t we on high alert about this much more probable “clear and present danger” as well?
My point here is that many managers and business owners focus their attention and efforts on the latest threat to the company’s well-being (be it an underperformer, a competitor or the state of the economy), rather than looking at and tweaking the big picture to ensure all systems and employees are operating at peak performance.
