E-Cig Explodes in Florida Man’s Mouth

A Florida man faces burns and injuries after his e-cigarette explodes.

A faulty battery caused an electronic cigarette to explode in a Florida’s man’s mouth on Monday, severely burning his face and removing some of his teeth and a chunk of his tongue, ABC News reported.

The man, which ABC News identified as Tom Holloway, 57, of Niceville, Fla., was using the device to aid him in his quest to quit smoking when it blew up.

“The best analogy is like it was trying to hold a bottle rocket in your mouth when it went off,” Joseph Parker, division chief for the North Bay Fire Department told the news station. “The battery flew out of the tube and set the closet on fire.”

The brand of e-cigarette, type of battery or age of the device remains unconfirmed. But Parker noted the battery was likely rechargeable lithium because a recharging station and other batteries found in the room.

Information on the event has been forwarded to the fire marshal’s office to include in any databases on the devices. But Parker said he has yet to hear of any similar instances.

Thomas Kiklas, co-founder of the Tobacco Vapor Electronic Cigarette Association, told ABC News that the industry is not aware of problems with the e-cigarettes or batteries exploding. He pointed to a federal report that found 2.5 million Americans used electronic cigarettes last year. “There have been billions and billions of puffs on the cigarettes and we have not heard of this happening before,” he said.

this is nothing to take lightly, but this is like one incident out of over 2.5 billion ecig sales.

But remember this: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6569187/ns/technology_and_science-wireless/t/exploding-cell-phonesprompt-warnings/#.Tzw4ZbEgerk how many cell phones explode every year?

It is really very strange.. I have heard this first time that e cig exploded in the mouth of a person.. I think that it may be because of overcharged battery or bad quality of battery.

E-Cig Explodes in a man’s Mouth, Strange. Once i herd about Cellphone battery explodes in Asia. I am using an electronic cigarette from a long time and my friends are using it too. We never found such a issue regarding this. And it may be as Jimmykepler456 said ”the battery may be over charged or of bad quality. And if you r looking for the best electronic cigarettes than switch to http://www.deltascan.org/

There are stories of electric toothbrushes exploding too. You’d be surprised how often the batteries in electronic devices explode. That is why joyetech (the official company behind the best made ecigs) put safety measures in their products like vents and blowout plugs. I know ego batteries have exploded from being charged improperly and abused, but they have a pressure release on the end so when they burst they dont go off like a pipe bomb.

WELL ITS VERY DELIBRATE THEY ARNT TELLING THE BRAND OR IF IT WAS A MOD OR IF HE WAS STACKING BATERYS I HAVE USED FIVE DIFRENT ECIGS AND HAVE STOPPED SMOKING FOR TWO YEARS SO THEY ARE EFECTIVE AND I STILL HAVE MY TEETH AND TONGUE ITS FUNNY THEY TALKED TO THE MAN AND TOOK HIS CHARGER AND EXTRA BATTERY BUT STILL DONT KNOW THE MANUFACTURER HMMMMMMM

Tragic story but I am willing to bet the guy was using unprotected batteries in a mod and also stacking them. I would love for this article to showcase the full facts around the batteries (models, makes, voltages) along with any other makes and models of e-cigs found in this persons home. Anyone who uses incorrect voltage batteries, stacks them , or buys unprotected batteries are asking for trouble.

I just started using Green Nicotine, and it’s legit. But after hearing about Tom, I feared it may happen to me. But I really want to keep using E-Cig. So, how do you know if your battery is not functioning well? All Im doing is when the cartridge gets warm, I let it cool down before using it again. Anyone can tell me?

Dont let your cigarette sit in a hot car or any place with excessive heat exposure. Avoid excessive moisture and be sure to use the proper atomizers for your device. When your charger says it’s done charging unscrew the battery. Basically treat them with the care that you would with any rechargeable battery. I believe your new cigarette battery is a L88b, the same ones that blu and volcano sells and those are only about 90mah 3.2v so I wouldnt be too worried about them exploding. If you take your battery unit apart (dont do it though) you will see how small it is and laugh. This guys battery must have been something around 2600mah 5v at least to get that kind of reaction. Even if the 650mah 3.7 ego battery was to explode it wouldnt cause anywhere near that much damage.

Yeah this guy had to be using a MOD. I have been vaping for more than 3 years and have had no problems. People have always got to mess with stuff. It is fishy they havent mentioned the type of ecig it was.

        • A1rh3ad

I use mods, but only with protected brand name batteries from a reputable distributor.

there ya go- and don’t leave a butane cigarette lighter on your dashboard parked outside either…d-uh?

        • A1rh3ad

Exactly, I knew a guy who lost a chunk of his thumb from a bic lighter he had left sitting in his car.

    • A1rh3ad

when I said unscrew the battery I meant take it off charge. If i’m correct you dont screw your battery in, it just charges when its pressed against the contact. Congrats on the ecig and welcome to the community. I have been vaping since 09 and havent even had the desire to smoke, except when there was a death in my family and i only started back for a month before I noticed i was getting the cough and wheezing again, so i switched right back. My wife no longer vapes or smokes. If you ever decide to step it up a notch I’d recommend the ego. I currently drip (hollow drip tip so you can drip directly onto the atomizer wick) with an ego battery and low resistance atomizer (1.5 ohm). I started with the DSE 901 because my wifes volcano wasn’t enough for me. I smoked 2 packs a day so I needed something with a little more vape. You should check out the ECF (e cigarette forum) for peer reviews tips and advise.

No way, considering the relatively LOW VOLTAGE. Batteries DO explode-maybe in the charger, or a large powerful one, but to FLY out of someones MOUTH? Doubtful.
You need amperage. cellphones need more power, and the circuitry is more complex. Do NOT leave an E-Cig charging unattended- be in the room- keep it off the floor, and away from a gas leak-don’t leave the house, etc.
