I think it is important that people are careful about what they ask for. It is common to hear people say “Government should be run like a business.” Big business or a small local business is the question? Big business has a tendency to only look at the profit. If a loss develops at one of its stores, that store or factory is eliminated. Elimination of the weak is a common solution.
We live in a society where the needs of its citizens have to come first. I remember when I was young, my Uncle and Aunt were complaining at my Uncle’s tavern about their Social Security Check being late. My Uncle that owned the tavern joined in and said, “Anybody over 65 is a burden anyway.” He said more than that, but I’m trying to keep the story G rated. Years later, when he turned 65, his tune changed.
My point is, in a society we have to look at needs of all, not just the wants of a few. There is a big difference between the ‘Good for all’ versus the ‘Profit for a few.’
I believe the Government has to be financially accountable, but the welfare and safety of the citizens has to come first. I was at a political meeting one evening when an elderly gentlemen spoke up and said, “Why should anyone over 60 have to contribute to schools taxes, they don’t have kids in school?” My response was, “Are you serious?”
I think, in this election year politicians should think before they speak. It might be helpful for some to write their thoughts down and read it back to themselves to get the real impact of their statements. Chances are they will wonder who the idiot was that thought that up.
