Several Cumberland Farms stores in Massachusetts are offering customers the option to pay at the pump by using a smartphone app.
Cumberland Farms has partnered with PayPal for the pilot program, the first of its kind, The Taunton (Mass.) Gazette reported.
The SmartPay app lets customers start the pump from a mobile phone and process the transaction through PayPal. The app works on any smartphone through a web browser, and native iPhone and Android apps are available through their respective app stores.
Customers who use the app will receive a five-cent per-gallon discount.
Cumberland Farms plans on building additional innovative smartphone products through the new SmartPay app.
“We are continually seeking ways to offer consumers convenience and value,” said Cumberland Farms President Ari Haseotes. “The SmartPay app does both. This app introduction is in line with the many ways in which we continue to evolve our company, from our store renovations, to our new food product introductions.”
