Smart convenience store allows guests to via HandPay, where individuals are recognized by the veins on the palm of their hand.
7-Eleven has partnered with Lotte Card and Lotte Data Communication, to launch its first smart convenience store equipped with a BioPay system at Lotte World Tower in Seoul, South Korea, according to The Korea Herald.
BioPay is a payment method that allows consumers to make transactions by identifying themselves with a part of their body linked to a preassigned credit card. The 7-Eleven store at Lotte World Tower uses the HandPay system, in which individuals are recognized by the veins on the palm of their hand. The method was selected over fingerprint and iris scanning because it was considered more convenient for customers.
Customers just put their products on a conveyor belt at an unstaffed counter and the items are scanned 360 degrees to locate the barcodes. Prices are tallied on the screen. The system is expected to be improved with an artificial intelligence system that can identify products without barcodes.
The store’s technology doesn’t end there. It also offers a refrigerator that automatically opens and closes, electronic price tags, a smart CCTV system and a Smart Safe Cigarette Vending Machine.
