I’ve been in retail for over 45 years. I still cannot understand why whenever there is positive or negative social unrest the retailer’s business is the first to take the hit.
Stores get destroyed, robbed, window broken, retailers accosted, the list goes on. I often wonder what the retailer had to do with the situation that caused the unrest.
I did hear an interview a reporter had with a lady involved in the destruction a few years back. Her response to the destruction was, “They got insurance.” I couldn’t help thinking, “insure your own house and burn it down if that’s the way it works.” Ignorance is bliss, but Stupid is just Stupid.
I guess it compares to the question my daughter asked my wife. “Why do people swear?” My wife’s answer was, “Because they have nothing better to say.” People involved in the destruction have watched it for years and have come to believe it is an acceptable social disobedience.
Well it’s not… Stealing or destroying property to get your rocks off is wrong. If you must, destroy your own stuff, not others.
The only fault of the retailer is providing jobs and services to the community in which the retailer is located. I wish more thought would be given to the old saying, “Don’t bite the hand that feeds you.”
