Consumer health trends lead Target to reevaluate food offerings.
In an attempt to keep up with emerging health trends, Target has announced that change is coming to its cafes. Although delicious, hot dogs, nachos are no longer at the top of the list for consumers. Target has received feedback from customers which displays a need for higher-quality, healthier food.
According to a report by USA Today, starting in October, Target will roll out a new café concept in 14 test stores. This new concept eliminates the numerous junk food options that are featured on the Target-branded café menus and replaces them with a wider array of items, such as “artisan style” pizza, fresh salads and fresh-pressed juices with beat and carrot.
Nine of the 14 stores will replace the current cafés with a fast-casual chain, Freshii, three will feature Pizza Huts and two Minneapolis stores will open outposts of D’Amico & Sons Italian restaurants.
Target CEO, Brian Cornell has made plans to increase the offering of natural and organic food products and local brands in Target stores, and these new cafés are only the beginning.
